Manila - Former UE Red Warrior Derrick Pumaren has been named the team’s new head coach effective Season 77 of the UAAP.
University of the East’s search for a new head coach ended Thursday when it officially hired Pumaren to lead the team.
The eldest of the three Pumaren brothers, Derrick last held a coaching job in 2008 when he was mentoring the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the PBA. Derrick’s younger brother, Franz, is currently a coach of the Air21 Express in the pro league. Dindo, on the other hand, was UE’s head coach from 2003-2008, during which he led the Red Warriors to a finals appearance in 2007, following a 14-0 elimination round campaign.
Former Letran Knights and two time NCAA Champion head coach Louie Alas was also considered for the job prior to Pumaren’s hiring.
“Alas didn’t pass the requirements regarding no commitments to any other team, as per the official statement of UE,” shared a source close to the situation. “Derrick Pumaren was very available and had no attachment to any team.”
There were murmurs that PBA legend Robert Jaworski and former University of the East head coaches Lawrence Chiongson and Dindo Pumaren were also considered for the job.
Derrick, who played for the Red Warriors in its championship seasons from 1978-1979, will inherit a roster fully capable of making the Final Four of the men’s basketball tournament in season 77. Roi Sumang, Charles Mammie, Chris Javier, and other mainstays are expected to return to lead UE back to the tournament playoffs.
The Red Warriors finished last season with a 7-7 record, thanks to various injuries and suspensions to its players.
